Before you go . . .

PRE-LEAVE RESOURCES

Feel free to use these resources as your leisure. If there's a resource that you found beneficial before taking leave that you found beneficial to your leavetaking experience that you think would benefit the greater community, feel free to share it with us and we we'll upload it here.

PRE-LEAVE CHECKLIST

Personal Leave

Consult an academic advising dean: Students who take a personal leave must consult with an academic dean in order to file the official Leavetaking form. Deans are happy to hear your plans. They can also provide insight on any ideas you have about your leave. Please visit the Dean of the College website for more information.

Medical Leave

Talk with a dean from the Office of Student Life (Graduate Center E): Students who take a medical leave work with a dean from the Office of Student Life to put a medical leave into place. Deans can help you understand the process of a medical leave, as well as assist in making a plan to heal oneself. Please visit the Office of Student Support Services website for more information.

Note for PLME students: You must notify the Associate Dean of Medicine about your decision to take a leave of absence after you have consulted with an academic dean.

STORIES FROM PERSONAL LEAVE

Six stories from personal leave as compiled by the leavetaking coordinators of 2015 - 2016.

MEDICAL LEAVE + BLOG

Medical leave has been recently reworked through collaboration between Dean Fernandez and Dean Shiner of the Office of Student Support Services (OSSS).  They provide more of these resources related specifically to Medical Leave on the OSSS website. You can find the updated Medical Leave Blog here. You can also find two additional medical leave stories here

You may also find that physically writing out your thoughts can be helpful when considering leave. Feel free to use the template to the left to work your thoughts out, use the questions as a guide.

Ryan Greene '16.5 and Matt Dang '17 compiled these stories in the spring of 2016. They asked some Leavetaking Coordinators of time past how their time off impacted their post-grad experience. This project was born out of conversations between Ryan, Matt and the CareerLab about ways to incorporate support for past, present, and future leavetakers when it comes to navigating internships/jobs/etc.
